Head of Sport & Public Services – Interim

Location: St Albans
Salary: £50,404 – £55,083 per annum
Contract: Full-time, Interim / Long-term
Potential: Could become permanent

We are seeking an experienced and ambitious Head of Sport & Public Services to provide strategic and operational leadership across the curriculum area.

This is an interim appointment, initially covering the role while the college recruits a permanent Head of Sport & Public Services. However, there is potential for the interim position to become permanent for the right candidate.

The Role

You will provide leadership across the Sport & Public Services curriculum area, ensuring high standards of teaching, learning and assessment and strong student outcomes.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing strategic and operational leadership across the curriculum area.
  • Managing staff, resources, budgets and curriculum performance.
  • Driving improvements in student achievement, retention, attendance and progression.
  • Ensuring high-quality teaching, learning and assessment.
  • Developing strong employer and industry partnerships.
  • Supporting curriculum development in line with skills and labour market needs.
  • Leading quality improvement and inspection readiness.
  • Promoting inclusive practice and a positive student experience.
  • Supporting innovative digital and AI-enabled approaches to curriculum delivery.
  • Contributing to wider college management and strategic priorities.

The role includes a teaching commitment of up to 7 hours per week, where required.

About You

You will ideally have:

  • Significant management experience within FE, sixth form or a similar education setting.
  • A recognised teaching qualification and degree-level qualification or equivalent.
  • Strong experience managing quality, performance and improvement.
  • A good understanding of Ofsted and the Education Inspection Framework (EIF).
  • Experience within Sport, Public Services or a relevant curriculum area.
  • Strong leadership, staff management and partnership-building skills.
  • Experience engaging with employers and industry.
  • A commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • An understanding of how AI and digital technology can be used effectively within education.

The Opportunity

This is a great opportunity for an experienced curriculum leader to step into a senior interim position and make an immediate impact.

The role will initially be interim/long-term while a permanent appointment is sought, but the successful candidate could have the opportunity to secure the position permanently.
