Lead Data Engineer – Line Management Essential

£66,000 - £75,000 + Bonus

We’re hiring a Lead Data Engineer with proven line-management experience to join one of the UK’s largest and most innovative logistics organisations. This role blends hands-on engineering with direct leadership responsibility, giving you the chance to shape both the data platform and the team that delivers it.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide technical and people leadership across the Databricks Common Data Platform

• Manage, mentor, and develop a distributed team of data engineers

• Drive hands-on development in Python and SQL with a focus on high-quality, scalable code

• Champion CI/CD and automated testing best practices

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver against business-wide data strategy

• Maintain resilience, governance, and documentation across platforms

• Identify and implement cost optimisation opportunities

• Support recruitment and play a key role in growing the data engineering function

• Work closely with the Head of Data Engineering to align on strategy and delivery

Key Requirements:

• 8+ years in data engineering with demonstrable line-management experience

• Expert-level knowledge of the Databricks platform

• Advanced Python and SQL for large-scale data solutions

• Strong background in data modelling for logistics or similar high-volume systems

• Proven track record of leading distributed teams in hybrid environments

• Experience with Spark (streaming and batch workloads)
