Job Title: VAT & Senior Bookkeeper

Overview:

Are you a VAT specialist ready to lead a team and take ownership of client portfolios? We’re recruiting on behalf of a highly reputable accountancy firm based near Stevenage, seeking an experienced VAT & Senior Bookkeeper to join their team on a full-time, permanent basis.

This is not just another bookkeeping role — the firm is specifically looking for someone who lives and breathes VAT. You’ll be the central figure managing all things VAT-related, advising clients, reviewing returns, and ensuring compliance, while also supporting and developing a small team of bookkeepers.

Key Responsibilities:

• VAT Leadership: Take full responsibility for VAT compliance and advisory across a broad client base.
• Client Support: Act as the primary contact for all client queries relating to VAT and bookkeeping.
• Team Supervision: Lead, train, and mentor a team of junior bookkeeping staff.
• Review & Oversight: Ensure all bookkeeping work is accurate, timely, and aligned with current regulations.
• Process Development: Identify and implement ways to improve VAT workflows and client service

Requirements:

• AAT Level 3 qualified (or equivalent qualification)
• Minimum 3 years in an accountancy practice, with a strong emphasis on VAT
• Proven experience managing or reviewing VAT returns
• Confident using Xero
• Strong leadership and organisational skills
• Must be commutable to Stevenage (this is an on-site role)
