This position has become available within the Hake Operations Department. The Vessel Manager is overall responsible for planning, organising and managing the operations and crew of the designated Hake Vessels and to ensure that the vessels operate efficiently and safely.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:

  • To proactively manage catch and land allocated Hake quota and by-catch allocations/limits per vessel.
  • Planning operations and budgets as well as implementation, monitoring and providing feedback in relation to all aspects with regards to procurement, training, HR, finance, maintenance and production teams.
  • To ensure compliance to statutory requirements, legislation and regulations pertaining to vessel operations and fishing.
  • Champions the development of a Safety culture on the designated Hake Vessels by ensuring that approved policies, procedures and guidelines are implemented, ensuring a safe and environmentally sound operation.
  • To agree on targets with the SHEQ department and responsible for its implementation with the vessel staff as well as the monitoring of these targets.
  • To agree and manage all contractors going onto the vessel outside of drydock projects, as well as managing and signing off with appropriate department on work completed on the vessel.
  • Actively participate in the MARSH Risk Audits and ensures implementation and ongoing monitoring of the agreed-to remedial actions in mitigation of the Audit findings.
  • Ensures that the vessel is crewed, operated, and maintained in accordance with national regulatory requirements and company standards, policies, and guidelines.
  • To minimize operational delays to maintain vessel availability and targeted utilization.
  • Reviewing and providing feedback on KPI's and statistics such as, vessel utilisation, fuel consumption, production performance.
  • To assess, review, propose and implement (once approved) operational efficiencies and enhancements to operations with a view to improving harvesting of quota, catch costs, and related operational costs at a most cost-effective means and benefit to the operations.
  • To develop and implement operational reports as a tool for tracking and reporting of key performance measures.
  • To attend and present such reports and related matters at management level meetings.
  • Familiarization of vessel factory processes, looking for improvements and efficiencies including quality products produced with adherence to product specifications and HACCP procedures.
  • Financial review with Financial Manager for discussion with skipper to implement savings and efficiencies and to manage cost.
  • Engage and agree on maintenance budget, procurement requirements and budget, Health and safety requirements for budget. 
  • To manage crew HR related functions w.r.t. crewing and certifications, training, work performance, remuneration, grievances and disciplinaries, with the assistance of the site-based HR team.
  • Responsible for checking the processing of the wage clerks and managing the staff compliment requirements with the skipper.
  • Involved in drydock/project planning.
  • Create an inspiring team culture.
  • To liaise with and foster good stakeholder relations.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES:

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • At least 3 to 5 years’ proven experience in vessel management, preferably in deep-sea trawling operations, is a prerequisite.
  • A post-matric qualification in the maritime industry, advantageous.
  • Experience in maritime legislation, merchant navy Act regulations, health and safety.
  • Ability to implement performance management and leadership principles.
  • Understanding of port facilities, operating procedures and costs.
  • Windows, MS Outlook, MS Excel/Word proficiency and knowledge of SAP advantageous.
  • Ability to compile budgets, reports and related presentation tools (Word, Excel, Power Point)
