We’re looking for Principal Design Manager – R&D Process Development. Based at our Capenhurst location. you’ll manage all of the requirements and technical activities for a given project or project scope (categorised as highly complex or of significant value to Urenco). This role offers a hybrid working model with two working from home days.
Team and Interfaces:
• Develop multi-discipline Design and Project Execution Capability for R&D project delivery
• Develop and maintain relationships with key 3rd Party suppliers.
• Support internal stakeholders including: Chemists, Engineering, Compliance and Programme Management as well as Compliance departments, Stakeholders for approval of REP/CEP submissions.
• Mentor inexperienced discipline engineers and help to ensure they receive sufficient support from more experienced colleagues
• There is a particularly important relationship with the R&D Programme Manager who is accountable for oversight of the R&D Project Programme

What you’ll do: (4-6 bullet pointed list of key responsibilities)
The role holder plays a pivotal role in developing Design Management Plans for complex multi-discipline R&D projects, this includes:
• Working with Design Engineers and Scientists from all disciplines to promote efficient project processes.
• Developing and maintaining relationships with 3rd Party Suppliers
• Tailoring R&D Project Engineering Management Processes to support the agile approach required for engineering within R&D
• Ensuring R&D Designs and Design Information are suitable for handover to other parts of Urenco after successful testing, characterisation and qualification
• Develop multi-discipline Design and Project Execution Capability for R&D project delivery
• Develop and maintain relationships with key 3rd Party suppliers.
• Support internal stakeholders including: Chemists, Engineering, Compliance and Programme Management as well as Compliance departments, Stakeholders for approval of REP/CEP submissions.
• Mentor inexperienced discipline engineers and help to ensure they receive sufficient support from more experienced colleagues
• Coordinate multi-discipline Engineering within R&D and must therefore have a solid appreciation of how the different engineering fields contribute to deliver a safe / fit-for-purpose design.
• Coordinate and oversee Design Reviews, Hazard Studies and agrees the Engineering deliverables required.
• The role holder has an important role in developing R&D’s Project Delivery capability for Engineering Projects and separating this function from delivery of front-end research or lab based experiments.
• The role holder will play a key role in ensuring R&D Designs can be smoothly transferred to other parts of Urenco
• Focusing on results orientation, demonstrating an interest in technology, an ability to motivate and a concern for engineering standards.
• Operational management of a multidiscipline design team of senior engineers (2-10 reports)
• Ensure consistency, completeness and optimization between engineering discipline areas
• Actively promote a pro-active safety culture and perform analysis to create a ‘learning from experience’ behaviour
• Developing relationships with a network of 3rd Party Suppliers to supplement and support in-house resource where appropriate
• Allocate design resources agreed with Discipline Leads in support of the R&D Project programme
• Interface with Chemists, R&D Design Authority and incorporate customer and site license condition requirements.
What do you need to thrive in this role?
• Degree or equivalent engineering qualification in relevant Engineering or Scientific discipline supported by an anticipated minimum 10-15 years’ experience ideally spanning practical end-use as well as front end roles.
• Chartered member of a relevant Engineering Institute or equivalent Scientific affiliation.
• Several years’ experience in co-ordination of complex multi-faceted projects relating to high hazard, highly regulated technical fields.
• We are looking for a flexible individual with wide ranging experience across a number of relevant fields
• Capability to manage complex projects with a multidiscipline team of Senior Scientists and Engineers.
• Thorough understanding and knowledge of all aspects of pilot plant design including interfaces and boundary limits.
• Ability to solve complex issues requiring scientific knowledge to meet customer, license and legislation requirements.
• Capability to translate company and customer demands into User Requirement Specifications, Business Cases requirements and specifications in specific design and engineering solutions
