Highways Operative – £14 per hour
Location: Weston-Super-Mare

Nature and Scope:
As part of the Highways division, you'll play a key role in the safe delivery of both reactive and scheduled maintenance programmes across the highway network. This is a hands-on role where you'll contribute to ensuring roads and highways remain in good repair, contributing directly to public safety and efficiency.

Job Purpose:
As a Highways Operative, you'll work as part of a small team (typically two or more) to carry out a wide range of routine, emergency, and minor civil engineering works in line with both programmed and reactive tasks. Some flexibility is required, as work may occasionally take place outside normal working hours.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Efficient Execution of Work: Carry out tasks assigned by the supervisor or chargehand, ensuring they are completed safely, efficiently, and within the specified timeframe. Escalate any issues or concerns to the supervisor promptly.

  2. Emergency & Winter Standby: Participate in emergency and winter standby rotas, and be ready to respond to callouts to address urgent business needs.

  3. Multi-Location Work: Travel to various locations around the county to perform a variety of maintenance tasks, including tarmac repairs, white line marking, gully repairs, and any other work related to the maintenance programme.

  4. Equipment Operation: Operate a variety of plant and equipment, ensuring compliance with safe systems of work to ensure efficient and effective completion of tasks.

  5. Health & Safety Compliance: Conduct daily risk assessments, and carry out vehicle, plant, and pre-site checks as required. Ensure all activities adhere to safe working procedures.

  6. Signage & Safety Maintenance: Erect and maintain signage, lighting, and guarding while working on the highway, ensuring compliance with legislation and safe working practices at all times.

  7. Regular Equipment Maintenance: Conduct regular maintenance checks on vehicles, plant, and equipment. Report any defects using the correct procedures to ensure all tools and machinery remain in top condition.

Requirements 

  • Full UK driving licence to (with no more than 6 penalty points)
  • Demonstrate initiative and ability to work unsupervised
