A law firm in Essex are looking for a senior conveyancing locum to act as a consultant as they launch their new conveyancing brand over the next few months.
The Practice Manager is not a conveyancer and has no prior experience running a conveyancing firm. They are fully set up including CRM, website, reception, and Google Ads and now require expert legal input for the day-to-day technical management and setup.
This is a paid, ad hoc, senior consultancy role for a highly experienced conveyancing solicitor or licensed conveyancer who can:
·Mentor the firm Manager on the whole conveyancing process
·Help with day-to-day technical issues, especially during startup
·Build and implement all legal templates and workflows needed for operations
·Provide training, guidance, and technical support as needed
What the firm will need you to do:
1) Mentorship & Training
·Train the Manager on the full conveyancing process from instruction to post completion
·Explain best practices, common risks, and client/consultant expectations
·Be available to answer ad hoc questions during the early months
2) Process Design
·Create or refine:
oClient care letters
oAML & ID verification procedures
oExchange & completion checklists
oSDLT and post-completion processes
oRisk warning templates
oCommunication templates for clients/lenders
3) Ongoing Technical Support
·Be available (on call or by arrangement) to assist with:
oClient issues or complaints
oConsultant-related technical queries
oUnusual title issues or process blockages
·Help assess the work/approach of new consultants if needed
Ideal Candidate Profile Experience:
·15+ years in residential conveyancing
·Strong experience with freehold, leasehold, shared ownership, and new builds
·Previously responsible for creating file-handling processes, templates, and SOPs
·Has mentored or trained junior conveyancers, paralegals, or support staff
·Ideally has worked with or within a startup law firm, small team, or consultancy model
The nature of this role means that you will need to be a calm, structured, confident communicator able to explain legal processes to non-lawyers and take ownership of process and template setup. You should be comfortable working remotely and flexibly.
This will be an ongoing consultancy arrangement although the number of hours will likely taper off later on as everything becomes established. The firm have estimated 5-10 hours initially so this should fit around other commitments - although you will need a degree of flexibility to be able to respond to their queries as required.
Any interest, please respond via email with the following:
·Your hourly rate.
·Earliest available start date.
·Confirmation that you have at least 5-10 hours of capacity for the next 3-6 months.
·A summary of similar experience - e.g. setting up a conveyancing firm/department/training staff etc.
