The DTHF’s Aerobiology Research Centre is seeking to appoint a suitably qualified person to the position of Laboratory Technologist. This is a research laboratory-based position that will perform routine microbiology, including mycobacterial, assays, in Biological Safety Level 2 and 3 laboratories as part of larger tuberculosis (TB) transmission projects

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Technology Degree, or Bachelor of Science Honors Degree, in Microbiology or a related discipline, and, 2 or more years of, post qualification, experience working in a laboratory OR National Technical Diploma in a relevant field plus 3-5 years laboratory experience
  • At least 1-year laboratory experience in working in sterile BSL2 and/or BSL3 laboratory conditions.
  • Experience in working with human samples

  • Excellent decision making and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to conduct data collection and data organisation activities
  • Computer skills (MS Word, MS Excel, internet, and email) at intermediate level
  • Ability to work independently and accurately with minimal supervision
  • Excellent verbal and written communication; proficiency in English
  • Strong planning and organizing skills and deadline driven


  • Previous experience in a clinical and/or infectious diseases laboratory
  • GCP (Good Clinical Practice) certificate


  • Perform research laboratory techniques that support the Tuberculosis (TB) Transmission Projects undertaken in the Aerobiology Research Centre Laboratories
  • Perform research study sample processing, and research study assays applied within the Aerobiology Research Centre Laboratories
  • Recording of study/sample data according to study guidelines
  • Daily data capture and data report completion
  • Participate in routine laboratory operations/maintenance tasks, as per scheduled daily, weekly, and monthly rosters
  • Participate in maintaining the laboratory environment according to policies and standards, including Health and Safety
  • Participate in quality control and quality assurance processes
  • Participate in maintaining sample storage, sample biobanking, and related hard copy/digital sample inventories
  • Assist with sample shipments
  • Share technical expertise with team members/collaborators and participate in training of new personnel
  • Attendance of and participation in relevant meetings
  • Communicate and presentation of data
