Hays Legal is working in an exclusive partnership with Birmingham City Council to recruit up to 20 Solicitors and Senior Solicitors on a permanent basis. Applications are welcomed from those seeking a full-time (36.5 hours), part-time or job share opportunity, as well as those seeking a remote or hybrid opportunity. While the Council is amenable to agile working, there are some teams, including Criminal Litigation, Housing (Community Safety & Housing Management) and Commercial Property, that will require the postholder to attend in-person with short notice. Your new role The practice areas that we are recruiting into at Solicitor level are:
As a Solicitor, reporting into a Senior Solicitor at Birmingham City Council, you will provide first-rate legal services to City Council departments, officers, employees, and senior solicitors regarding the conduct of casework relevant to your legal discipline. You will act as an Advocate (in Courts, Inquiries, Arbitrations and Tribunals) as may be required by the nature of your work. You may prepare reports for, and attend Committees, participate in special projects, and undertake any other duties and responsibilities relevant to your role. This is an exciting time to be joining the legal services department at Birmingham City Council, Europe’s largest local authority, and one of the largest legal teams in the UK. The headquarters for the legal services department are based at 10 Woodcock Street, B7 4BL. Postholders may also be required to travel to and/or be based at other office(s) where required. What you’ll need to succeed To be considered, you will be an England & Wales or Commonwealth qualified Solicitor or Barrister (including CILEX/SQE) with strong training and ideally in-house experience. You must have excellent knowledge in public law, in one of the practice areas listed above and will be competent in drafting and negotiating. In addition, you should be able to demonstrate a sound appreciation of local government practice and should be a committed team player. A DBS is required if you are making an application for a role within the adult law team.
