HLTA– Primary school in Southampton

A small primary school on the edge of Southampton is looking for an HLTA for the new academic year. Rated  ‘Good’ by Ofsted since opening, The school has a strong sense of community, with pupils encouraged to be kind, curious, and proud of their achievements. Its outdoor spaces and creative learning approach help children feel engaged and excited about coming to school each day.

This long-term role begins in September , with potential to go permanent for the right candidate.

Applicants must hold an HLTA qualification, CACHE Level 3 in Education, or an Education Degree.

Key responsibilities for this Higher-Level Teaching Assistant role are:

  • Lead whole-class learning in the absence of a teacher, following planned lessons and maintaining progress.
  • Plan, prepare, and deliver learning activities under teacher guidance, adapting materials to meet pupil needs.
  • Assess pupil learning, record progress, and provide feedback to teachers to inform next steps.
  • Provide targeted intervention for individuals and small groups, including catch‑up, SEND support, and extension work.
  • Support behaviour management, applying consistent strategies and promoting a positive learning environment.
  • Contribute to curriculum planning, offering insights based on pupil performance and classroom experience.
  • Model effective practice for other support staff and assist with mentoring or training new TAs.
  • Communicate professionally with parents/carers, sharing observations or updates when appropriate.
  • Prepare and organise resources, including ICT, practical materials, and differentiated learning tools.
  • Supervise pupils during non‑teaching times such as breaks, transitions, and educational visits.
  • Support safeguarding procedures, recognising concerns and reporting them in line with school policy.
  • Collaborate with external professionals, such as SENCOs, therapists, or specialist teachers, to support pupil needs.

The minimum requirements for this Teaching Assistant role are:

  • Have the right to work in the UK
  • 2 Years’ worth of references
  • A current DBS on the update service or be willing to apply for one
  • Have an HLTA qualification/a level 3 CACHE certification/ a degree in education
